(Colombo, Sri Lanka) – Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement categorically denying reports that its application to join the BRICS economic bloc has been rejected. The clarification comes in response to recent local media claims suggesting that the island nation’s bid for membership had been unsuccessful.
“Sri Lanka wishes to clarify that its expression of interest to join BRICS has not been rejected,” the ministry stated emphatically. It further explained that the BRICS member states are currently in the process of “finalizing the guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures for the expansion process.” This implies that Sri Lanka’s application, along with those of other aspiring nations, is still under consideration.
The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has emerged as a significant economic and geopolitical force in recent years. Sri Lanka’s interest in joining the bloc stems from a desire to strengthen economic ties with these emerging economies and explore new avenues for development cooperation.
The Foreign Ministry also highlighted that Sri Lanka’s intention to join the New Development Bank (NDB), established by the BRICS nations, has been “warmly welcomed” by the bank’s president. The NDB aims to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging economies.
Sri Lanka’s pursuit of BRICS membership reflects a broader trend of countries seeking to diversify their economic partnerships and reduce reliance on traditional Western-led institutions. The BRICS bloc offers an alternative platform for cooperation and development, particularly for countries in the Global South.
While the final decision on Sri Lanka’s membership remains pending, the government’s clarification underscores its commitment to engaging with BRICS and exploring the potential benefits of joining this influential group of nations. The expansion of BRICS is expected to be a key topic of discussion at the upcoming BRICS summit, where further details on the membership process are anticipated.
